Homemade body butter for dry skin

Written by Stacy Karen of A Delightful Home.

In winter it is typical for skin to dry out and need extra moisture. Spending so much time inside with heated air can really take it’s toll.

Besides drinking more water, applying body butter is a great way to restore moisture and sooth dry skin.

Plus, it’s super easy to make.

Making body butter involves nothing more than measuring, melting and pouring. (I’m pretty sure I say this almost every time I post a tutorial for homemade skin care products. But it’s just so easy! I wish everyone knew how simple was to create natural skin care at home.)

The ingredients in this recipe create a heavy cream that is nourishing to the skin. It is intended for use on the body and not the face.

How to Make Body Butter

To make body butter, you will need:

1 1/4 ounce cocoa butter
1 tablespoon coconut oil
2 tablespoons of sweet almond oil
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 tablespoon beeswax pastilles (or grated beeswax)

Method:

Place all ingredients in an heavy saucepan or the top of a double boiler.

Warm over low heat until everything is melted.

Pour the melted mixture into a clean jar. Stir the mixture a few times as it cools.

Makes about 1/2 cup of body butter.

Essential oils can be added for extra fragrance. About 15 manosdeayuda  drops will give a nice subtle scent.

Allow the mixture to cool briefly before adding the essential oils.

Try peppermint or sweet orange essential oil for a body butter that smells good enough to eat.

Pretty easy, right?

About the ingredients

Cocoa butter

Cocoa butter comes form the seed of the cocoa plant. It is solid at room temperature and smells a lot like chocolate.

It is a wonderful skin softener and can be used to make many products such as body butter and lip balm. It can also be use alone. Just rub it on the skin (it melts on contact). Great for pregnant bellies.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is a wonderful for the skin. It is also marvelous to eat. I can’t sign the praises of coconut oil highly enough. You really need to get some.

Sweet Almond oil

Sweet almond oil is a pale, golden color and appears in many homemade skin care products. I use it all the time. It is pressed from the seed of the sweet almond tree and is known to have skin-softening properties.

Sesame oil

Sesame oil comes from pressed sesame seeds. It is a pale yellow/golden color and has antioxidant properties. It is especially helpful in moisturizing normal to dry skin. It is available at many grocery stores (just don’t accidentally buy toasted sesame oil).

Beeswax

Beeswax is almost magical! Yes, that’s over the top, but once I got my hands on some, the possibilities of what I could make greatly multiplied.

Beeswax is used as thickener in many homemade skincare recipes. It enables you to make lip balm, butters, salves, creams, lotions, vapo rub, and more.

I buy beeswax pastilles from Mountain Rose Herbs. Pastilles make measuring and mixing very easy. In the past I have purchased beeswax in a large block, but it is amazingly difficult to cut!
